![]() In a sense, homophobia serves to create another country inhabited by those who are enslaved by this stranglehold of free expression of friendship and contact which by all rights should be unencumbered by the pressures of sexual persuasion. The fear of being exposed or of being rejected in platonic circumstances breeds suspicion and a general sense of isolation and alienation that Baldwin suggests invades normal human interaction between homosexuals and members of straight society.
